The last expo at the Kunstforum Vienna showed works of the collaboration between Andy Warhol
and Jean-Michel Basquiat. It was Bruno Bischofberger who brought the two artist together already
having in mind the Collaboration, aware of the principal readiness of both to work together.
Tony Shafrazi, in cooperation with Bruno Bischofberger, was the first to show the Collaboration
of Warhol and Basquiat in the New York gallery ; he had the two artists photographed in boxer
outfits for the photo motif : Collaboration as Battle, the canvas as a boxing ring.
was born on the 22 December 1960 in Brooklyn, New York.
He grows up there as a child of Caribbean parents.He showed his artistic talents already early.
After starting out at the graffiti scene- from which he later distance himself- Basquiat scrapes a living
together by selling self designed T-shirts and Postcards.
He plays in the band Gray, a reference to the Gray’s Anatomy, a book which gave his mother to him
when he had to be am extend period in hospital and which served him later as motif repertoire for his
drawings and paintings. Basquiat borrows techniques of mixing and sampling from New York street
culture.In 1982 he is the youngest artist ever to be represented at the documenta7 in Kassel.
A year later he meets Warhol. From now on his career as an artist takes a ballistic course.
For his motifs Basquiat draws on all imaginable and various sources: high culture, pop culture ,
medecine, religion, history. He dovetails imaginary and text, likewise everyday culture, with the black
african tradition. Within 8 years he produce a wide-ranging oeuvre encompassing painting,
drawings an objects. Basquias tragique death-despite several failed withdrawal attempts, he died 1988
after a overdose of heroin.
Until today, the reputation of a drug-addicted infant terrible of the art scene has always overshadowed
his work as an artist.

The son of Ruthenian immigrants, Andy Warhol studied art at the Carnegie Institute of Technology.
He worked as an advertising designer before becoming, in effect, the Father of Pop Art with his
silk-screened pictures of Campbell’s Soup cans and distorted images of Marilyn Monroe.
He was the leading artist of the Pop Art.
His works explore the relationship between artistic expression, celebrity culture and advertisement
that flourished by the 1960s.
Andy Warhol died following complications from gall bladder surgery. He was 58 years old.
The exhibition place this grandiose Collaboration in central focus.
